Even Marco Rubio Is Scared Of Donald Trump -- Here's Why
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has developed a very specific survival tactic for traveling with President Donald Trump aboard Air Force One. And no, it’s not about policy disagreements or diplomatic tension. It’s about sleep.
Or rather, the fear of being seen sleeping. Seriously.

Rubio, who is 54 and currently serving as the nation’s top diplomat, admitted to New York Magazine this week that he actively hides his naps from the president during long flights. But why??? Well, he explained it like this:
“There’s an office with two couches, and I usually want to sleep on one of those two couches. But what I do is I cocoon myself in a blanket. I cover my head. I look like a mummy.”
WTF?!
That image alone is jarring: a grown man (a powerful man, a freaking cabinet secretary!!!) wrapping himself up like a child at a sleepover. And it’s not for comfort. It’s for protection.
Rubio went on to explain exactly what he’s protecting himself from:
“And I do that because I know that at some point on the flight, [Trump is] going to emerge from the cabin and start prowling the hallways to see who is awake.”
Let that sink in: the president prowling, staffers on edge, people calculating how they appear even while their eyes are closed.
Rubio reportedly needs rest on overseas trips — which is, uh, something that should be entirely normal. But Trump, who is 79 and famously doesn’t nap, has created an environment where even basic human needs can apparently be perceived as weakness.
Rubio said he’d rather Trump think a random staffer is asleep than realize his Secretary of State is resting, because he doesn’t want the president to think:
“…Oh, this guy is weak.”
Uh, seriously?! It would almost be funny if there wasn’t such an unbelievable amount of incredibly serious s**t going on in the world right now… but anyways…

The same article focused heavily on Trump’s health and aging, noting that he’s been seen closing his eyes during meetings. When asked about that, Rubio jumped in to defend him, insisting:
“It’s a listening mechanism.”
Trump himself has offered a blunter explanation, saying Cabinet meetings can be “boring as hell,” and adding:
“I’m going around a room, and I’ve got 28 guys — the last one was three and a half hours. I have to sit back and listen, and I move my hand so that people will know I’m listening. I’m hearing every word, and I can’t wait to get out.”
Uh, okay…
In another context at a different time rather than the one in which we find ourselves today as part of this crazy world, this would all just be a strange (and maybe humorous) anecdote. But in this time and place, it feels… ominous.
