Harry Styles Crashes Ryan Gosling’s SNL Monologue: ‘What Are You Doing Here, Man?’
Come for the jokes, stay for the dual heartthrobs battling it out for attention! That just about summarizes this week’s Saturday Night Live monologue!
On Saturday, Ryan Gosling took the Studio 8H stage to host the sketch comedy show for the fourth time — but the spotlight was quickly stolen from him! During his opening monologue, the Barbie star, who wore a pinstripe suit over a red button down shirt, began with gratitude and sarcasm:
“Thank you very much! I’m thrilled to be back hosting, especially now. This is the perfect time to be in New York City: early March. Right? No, it’s beautiful.”
His eyes then dart to the audience where a familiar face is sitting front row:
“Is that Harry Styles?”

The crowd immediately erupts into applause as the camera cut to the One Direction alum enjoying the show with a smile across his face. Ryan asks:
“What are you doing here, man?”
Teasing next week’s episode, Harry responds:
“Well, I’m hosting next week and it’s been a while so I just wanted to watch and get a feel for it.”
Ryan hits back:
“Yeah, that’s so professional, that’s awesome. You’re here, I just wish someone would have told me. Anyway, welcome.”
The heartthrob goes on to playfully stumble over his words while promoting his new film Project Hail Mary:
“I have a new movie coming out, it’s called Project Harry Styles — nope, nope, that’d be a good movie though. It’s called Project Hail Mary. And people are saying it’s like E.T. meets Interstellar, which is crazy because those are, like, what? Two of the best films of all time? So they’re kind of saying it’s, like, what, double that?”
Ha! He goes on:
“I don’t know, I didn’t say it, I just have always loved making films about space. Just something about them gives me perspective.”
The Notebook star then starts giving a long-winded spiel about space before the SNL cameras cuts to Harry once again:
“It reminds me that the Earth is just a speck in the cosmos. I mean look at that: the pale blue dot. That’s us. On it, everyone you know, everyone you’ve ever heard of, lived out their lives. Every king, every peasant, every — I’m sorry, why are we on Harry Styles?”
LOLz! The pop star responds:
“I don’t know, I’m just listening.”
Hilariously, Ryan asks him to tone down his cool factor:
“Well could you listen less cool? It’s like your coolness is becoming a bit of an issue. Anyway, back to the pale blue dot. Home to every hero, every villain, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every young couple in love.”
The camera then cuts to a split screen of both Harry and Ryan as the crowd erupts into laughter. Ryan says:
“Every — what’s going on? I’m just trying to understand why we’d be in a split screen? Come on guys, let’s get rid of the split screen.”
But Ryan should have been a bit more specific, because HE gets removed, leaving only Harry in the frame:
“Not like that! No! Not like that! You know what I meant. Come on, what’s going on with camera 2?”
The camera operator is then revealed to be wearing a “I heart Harry” crewneck.
HA!
Cast member Sarah Sherman then joins Ryan onstage asking if they’re still going to do the “big dance number,” which he declines “now that Harry Styles is here.” Poking fun an Morgan Wallen’s infamous SNL episode, Sarah jokes, “Harry Styles is here? Get me to God’s country,” before running over to the Watermelon Sugar singer. The whole bit crescendoes in nearly the whole cast, including Ryan, singing Harry’s song Sign of the Times — with a bit of I’m Just Ken flair. Watch all the hilariousness (below):
